Aspartame an artificial sweetener used in diet drinks are just as harmful as full-sugar versions.
Diet drinks are marketed to help curb weight gain, but is it true? Are these sugar-substitute really beneficial to us? If so, why is obesity still on the rise?
Aspartame is put in fizzy drinks such as Coke and Pepsi as a healthier option for consumers.
But studies have revealed that aspartame can cause more harm than goodness. It is linked to weight-gain, diabetes, heart disease and increase risks of high blood presure. Artificial sweeteners fail to trigger the brain regions and hormones that tell us we are full and so we eat more. Another possible situation, is one tends to over-indulge in the sugary drinks due to the low-sugar content claims.
